A single-engine aircraft's most important component, next to it having wings, is the engine. Some would argue that the airframe is,
but most plane's are on the ground most likely because of a high time engine that needs to be replaced, and
the owner cannot come up with the $15k to $20k necessary to have it overhauled or replaced.

In the case of N50037, the engine had a crack in the crank case that would leak after about an hour of flying.
So either the plane had the crack when we bought it, and the owner knew it, or it was missed it on the "pre-buy inspection".

Nevertheless, the engine had to be replaced. So the research began. Since I am a Research Scientist by trade, this part would
prove to be fun, but very time consuming. Ha! Little did I know what I was getting into! A plane is a lot like a child,
better take care of it, or things will get out of hand in a hurry!

There are 3 types of engine replacements:

  • Factory Remanufactured - "Zero-Time"

  • Factory Overhaul

  • Local Overhaul

Below is a matrix I used while collecting information from various vendors. Signature Engines, Inc. in
Cincinnati was the winning bidder.

CMH Aviation pulled the old engine, put it on a pallet, and I drove it down to Cincinnati to exchange it
for the overhauled engine. The installation cost was approximately $1500.
